Applying for public sector jobs: what to expect

Public-sector jobs — federal, provincial, municipal, health authorities, school boards and Crown corporations — are some of the most stable work in Canada. The hiring process is also more structured than in the private sector.

Read the "essential qualifications" carefully

Public-sector postings usually separate essential qualifications from assets. You must clearly show you meet every essential qualification, often in a screening question or cover letter, or your application may not move forward.

Answer screening questions with examples

When asked "Do you have experience with X?", don't just answer yes. Say where, when and what you did: "Yes — from 2021 to 2023 at ABC Services I processed about 40 benefit applications a week and verified supporting documents."

Expect several stages

A typical process might include a written test, an interview, reference checks and a security clearance. It can take anywhere from a few weeks to several months.

Pools and inventories

Some employers create a "pool" of qualified candidates. Being placed in a pool means you passed, but you may be offered a job later — sometimes for a different location or team.

Keep a copy of the posting

Postings often come down once they close. Save a copy so you can prepare for the interview using the exact qualifications listed.
